A rack without screws or nails? This is what it looks like!

Our ambassador Gaëtan Samyn is very passionate about woodworking. He has already completed many woodworking projects and regularly uses Rubio Monocoat products. One of his latest challenges was to make a rack without screws or nails. The photos prove that the project was once again a success!

Experimenting with wood joints

Gaëtan was asked to make a shelf for ceramics shop ’t Zwaluwnest. He decided to rely on bread racks from the past and chose to make the shelf without screws or nails, except for the wheels at the bottom to move the rack. Instead, he focused on the wood joints. The biggest challenge here for Gaëtan was to do as much as possible with handtools.

Authenticity with Rubio Monocoat

Since the rack would be placed in a ceramics shop full of handmade bowls, plates, vases and more, the shelf obviously had to breathe authenticity. After consulting with our Account Manager Olivier Ostijn they decided to go for the Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C Pure, in combination with the Rubio Monocoat Pre-Aging (colour Smoke Light). The Pre-Aging gives the new wood an instant aged look and thus Gaëtan obtained the rustic result that you can admire below.

Tip of the month: How do you combine oil and glue?

Oil and glue are not usually a good match. When you make a project with wood joints, it is important that you only rub oil on the places where you do not need to use glue. Therefore it is best to finish your project with oil after everything has been put together and glued. Products that do not contain oil, such as a colouring or the pre-treatment with Rubio Monocoat Pre-Aging, can be applied directly on the wood joints since this does not make the glue stick less.
