Back to the roots with this ecological log house in nature
In Scandinavian countries, the trend is to recharge as much as possible. A lot of people choose a lifestyle in which they return to nature. This includes a healthy and even vegetarian or vegan diet. This choice for nature also reappears in architecture. Our new project of the month for example is a log house in Finland. The wooden house completely fits in its natural surroundings and was built in an ecological manner.
Respect for nature
Joni Inkinen has adopted a very natural lifestyle. As commercial director with the Finnish health and fitness company Puhdistamo
he is dealing with healthy food, wellness and sports on a daily basis. The company is after all the leading distributor of superfoods in Finland. Joni wanted to pursue this ideology for his home as well. He decided to make his house as ecological as possible. That’s why he chose to work without plastics or toxic building materials. The result is certainly worth being seen! Joni himself refers to his home as the “Superfood of living”.
The log house
As the name suggests, the log house is mainly made out of wood. Thanks to large window sections, nature is invited into the interior of the house. Recharging is made fully possible by the sauna, hot tub and fireplace. Of course, a fitness room couldn’t be absent here either. The house was designed by architect Janne Kantee of Polar Life Haus
(Honkatalot), a family company that realised its first log house as long ago as 1907. With more than a century of experience, the company continues to succeed in creating real gems, as is the case here.
Ecological finish with Rubio Monocoat
That much wood naturally needs to be protected and finished in the right way. To stick with the ecological theme, they chose to work with the environmentally friendly products of Rubio Monocoat
. All chosen products contain 0% VOC and are very low in usage, which ensures a considerable reduction in packaging and transport. In addition, Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C has been awarded Food Contact Compliance, the Toy Standard EN 71-3 and the Eurofins Indoor Air Comfort Gold.
Both the interior and the exterior of the property contains brushed spruce logs. The outside wall was protected with the Rubio Monocoat Sunprimer HWP
(Black) and the Rubio Monocoat Hybrid Wood Protector
(Charcoal). Thanks to the pre-treatment with the Sunprimer HWP the house gets an intense black colour and the wood is better protected from UV radiation. For the inside Polar Life Haus worked with the pre-colouring Rubio Monocoat Precolor Easy
and the colouring and protective product Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C
. The colour Oyster was applied on all the interior wood for the latter product. The Precolor Easy however was chosen in two different colours depending on the room and furniture: the Mystic Brown and the Antique Beige.
The project was caught on camera by photographers Sami Vaskola
and Hans Koistinen
. The video of Polar Life Haus
also shows the property in its full glory. A successful project, don’t you think?
